Domestic abuse

Domestic Abuse is a comprehensive term used to describe abuse in the forms of Domestic Violence, Violence against Women, Gender Based Violence and Sexual Violence.

The Gwent-wide Adult Safeguarding Board recognises that adults at risk may be victims of Violence Against Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence. The Violence Against Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence (Wales) Act 2015 focusses on prevention, the protection of victims and support for those affected by these issues.

According to the Home Office (2015) Domestic Abuse (also referred to as Domestic Violence) is any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are, or have been, intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality. The abuse can encompass, but is not limited to:

  • psychological
  • physical
  • sexual
  • financial
  • emotional

Domestic Abuse statistics suggests that more than 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men are affected at some point their lifetime.
